A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON THE EFFICIENCY OF PINE OIL PREPARATION AS A FOOD ATTRACTANT IN VIRUS SUSPENSION

  • This paper reports the preliminary results on the study of the efficiency of pine oil preparation as a food attractant in virus suspension for suppressing pine caterpillars. Both the room and field tests show that the efficiency of the attractant with concentrations of 1%,3%,and 5% in the virus suspension reveals in raising of the mortality rate of the infected larvae by 16.2%,10.6% and 27.1% respectively. And the acceptable concentration of the attractant seems to be 5%.The mechanism of the baiting function is briefly discussed and,the method of tests is described in detail. On considering the simplicity of formulating the pine oil preparation and the rich supply and low price of the material in this area, the writer expects that the further study and popularization of this food attractant may be of significance in the practice of pest management.
