A PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE DISTRIBUTION AND DAMAGE OF TEA TREE PESTS IN YUNNAN PROVINCE

  • This paper deals with species, distribution and damage of the tea tree pests in Yunnan province.Since 1974,85 species have been discovered, belong to 8 orders and 41 families. The Lcpidopteran and Coleoptera are the most abundant. These insects can be divided into 6 groups according to their feeding habit,i,e.leaf-eating insects,twig-stem insects, sucking insects,seed-fruit insects, soil insects and mites.Although the distribution of these pests is rather wide, their damage is usually slight. However, the follwing species are of importance, sometimes resulting in serious injury in limited areas;tea caterpillar(Euproctis pseudoconspersa),tea bunch caterpillar(Andraca bipunctata),summer fruit tortrix moth(Adoxopkyes orana),tea shoot borer(Parametriates theae),black tarsus longicorn beetle(Chreonoma atritarsis),smaller green leaf hopper(Empoasca flavescens),scale insects(Coccoided),black citrus aphid(Toxoptera aurantii),chillie thrips(Scirtothrips dorsalis),black cutworm(Agrotis ypsilon),Formosan white ant(Odontotermes formosanus),tea red spider mite(Oligonychus coffeae) and tea rust mite(Acaphylla theae) etc.
