A STUDY ON THE AFFORESTATION PROJECT FOR THE PROTECTIVE BELT ALONG THE ARTIFICIAL SAND BANKS OF DAYING RIVER

  • This article deals with the afforestation project on the banks of the upper and middle reaches of Daying River. An artificial bank has been specially built of sand along the river because of the particular geological structure of the riverbed. The sand is almost pure and was obtained from the riverbed itself. To stabilize the artificial bank and to enable it to control the river effectively, certain biological measures must be taken. These consist of planting strong protective belts of woody plants on it. In this article, the afforestation project on the sand bank is described and the reasons for its success and failure in restricting the river within its channel are analyzed. The selection of species of tree, their disposition and the methods of afforestation have also been investigated in detail.
