The breeding techniouefor tara(caesalpinia spinosa kuntze) seedlings

  • Tara(Caesalpinia spinosa Kuntze) plants are native to south America, mainly distributing in the vallev area in the middle of the eastern Andes and in the seashoredesert along the pacific Ocean. The plant was successfully introducedOthe semiarid valleyin Yunnan in 1991.This paper deals with the technique for breeding Tara seedlings.Theseeds were treated with concentrated sulphuric acid (95%)for 20~30 minutes and kept inwet for 3 days.In this way,the germination percentage was raised from 15% to over 92%,and the germinative period shortened from 63 days to 4~5 days. The seeds werebreeded in nursery-bags in April;the seedlings reached 24.6~25.7 cm in height and 0.33~0.37 cm in diameter at bottom in July. Measures for controlling seedling pests are alsodiscussed.
