The silvicultural technique and species selection for the fuelwood plantation in yuxi city

  • The experiments on fuelwood were carried out in Yuxi City,The data in-dicated that the suitable tree species for fuelwood plantation in Yuxi district were Euca-lyptus globulus,E.maideni,Acacia mearnsii,Aluns nepolensis and A cacia dealbata. These species were characterized by fast growth and high production of fuelwood.Thesite preparation in level belts with 60 cm in width,50 cm in depth and 200 cm ininterval, and planting density with spacing of 2 m×1 m were proposed for fuelwoodplantation in Yuxi district. The optimal season for planting was the period between middle and late July when the raining season began. The survival ratio of the plantationplanted with nutritional bag was over 95%.Application of fertilizer (20 g/tree) in the 3succeeding years after planting could increase biomass and accelerate closure of the plan-tation.The annual biomass of fuelwood was about 16.88~34.04 t/hm2 (air dry weight)in the flrst 1.25 years of the young plantation for the selected species. The stump heightalso had some influences on the sprouting and biomass of the selected tree species.Theproposed stump height were 30 cm for Eucalyptus,> 30 cm for Alnus nepalensis,>50 cm for A cacia mearnsii and no limit for A cacia dealbata. The result provided the re-liable information for the extension and development of fuelwood plantation, the reser-vation of forest resource and the resolution of energy shortage in agriculture and indus- try production as well as in people's fuelwood in Yuxi district.
