Survey of Research on Curculionidae in Yunnan Province

  • Chinese weevil taxonomists Chao Yangchung and Chen Yuanqing established the foundation of weevil taxonomy in Yunnan Province. The insuffiencient studing on taxonomy of Curculionidae in Yunnan was mainly constrained by the relatively lower level of national taxonomy of the family and severe shortage of researchers in the field in the province.145 species belonging to 56 genera and 14 subfamilies had been found in Yunnan by 2002.Applied basic researches on Curculionidae in Yunnan Province have been focused on the important pest species on mango, pine and chestnut. It was common that some scientific names of species in the family were misused and certain Chinese names were not unified in the corresponding previous studies. Some weevils of economic significance could not be identified correctly, which has prevented the forestry from rational development by effective control of vital pests in Yunnan Province.
