Growth Habit of Torreya grandis and the Key Techniques of Promoting Its Forestation Survival Rate

Torreya grandis naturally grows slowly and the survival rate of forestation is low, which prevents this tree species from being widely grown.Based on a detailed investigation into the previous forestation and the experience with both successful and failed results, a set of comprehensive techniques was integrated and particular forestation experiments were carried out.It was demonstrated that selecting suitable seedlings, applying proper protection while lifting and transplanting the seedlings, shallow soil loosening, right shading in seedling-period, and intensive tending were the key techniques to promote the survival rate of forestation.It was proved by having applied those techniques in recent years that the survival rate of Torreya grandis forestation has been risen from less than 40% to more than 85%, which provides technical support to the enlargement of planting area of Torreya grandis.
