Progeny Test on 52 Openly-pollinated Families of Cupressus lusitanica

  • Progeny test was carried out for 52 openly-pollinated families of Cupressus lusitanica. The results showed that Cupressus lusitanica grew rapidly in the experimental area. The average yearly growth rates of height, DBH, standing volume, crown diameter of 10-year-old plantation were 1.04 m, 1.43 cm, (0.009 6 m3/hm2) and 0.22 m respectively. There were significant differences in the tested growth traits and fruiting characteristics among the families. The family heritability of height, DBH, standing volume, crown diameter and seed yield indices was 0.76, 0.66, 0.68, 0.74 and 0.65 respectively. The individual heritability of the same indices was 0.27, 0.16, 0.18, 0.23 and 0.16 respectively. There was significant negative correlation between the growth traits and fruiting properties.9 superior families and 22 outstanding individual plants were selected, whose average genetic gain value for standing volume was between 13.47% and 25.20%.The growth rhythm of 10-year-old Cupressus lusitanica plantation was also analyzed.
