Growth Ring Width and Anatomical Properties of Toona sinensis Wood

  • Growth ring, vessel and fiber morphology of Toona sinensis wood were evaluated by using xylotomy and optical microscopy. The results were as follows: the growth ring width increased from pith to 10-year old, keeping vigorous growth from 1 to 20 years. The width, double wall thickness and lumen diameter of vessel in early wood and late wood increased from pith to 19-year old, then tending towards stability. The width of vessel in early wood and late wood were 12180 μm and 3875 μm, and the double wall thickness of vessel in early wood and late wood were 16.49 μm and 10.98 μm, respectively. The fiber length first increased from pith to 18-year, ending up with stability. The average fiber length, width, length to width ratio (L/W), double wall thickness, lumen diameter and double wall thickness to lumen diameter ratio (2T/D) were108094μm, 26.76 μm, 40.25, 7.96 μm, 18.80 μm, 0.43, respectively.
