Effects of Planting Density on the Growth Traits of Taxus wallichina Plantation

  • In order to evaluate the effects of planting density on the growth traits of Taxus wallichina, the experiment with different planting densities for 13 years T.wallichina plantation was established in Mingxi County, Fujian, to measure the indices of the growth and stem form indexes of T.wallichina seedlings. The relationship among the planting density, growth and stem form were investigated. The 4 classes of planting density were evaluated comprehensively. The results showed that planting density significantly affected 11 indices. The model fitting diameter distribution for different planting density of T.wallichina plantation with cumulative distribution function of Weibull distribution was good. The diameter distribution for plantation with 1 800 trees·hm-2, 2 400 trees·hm-2 and 3 000 trees·hm-2 planting density had been undergoing stable stand structure and reasonable competition. However, the diameter distribution for plantation with 3 600 trees·hm-2 planting density were in the late stage of natural thinning of competition period. The forest classification of T.wallichina plantation with different planting density showed that there has not yet appeared Ⅴ grade wood except for 3 600 trees·hm-2 planting density. Therefore, the construction of T.wallichina artificial timber forest should be carried out to select planting density, and its reasonable planting density is 3 000 trees·hm-2.
