Forest Carbon Storage in Guangxi Province Estimated by 8th Forest Inventory Data

  • According to the 8th forest inventory data of Guangxi Province, the carbon storage and carbon density of forests in Guangxi Province were estimated, using the volume-derived biomass method and average-biomass methods and combining the carbon content rate of various dominant tree species. In addition, the distribution characteristic of carbon storage was analyzed according to dominant tree species, age groups and forest category. The result were as follows:the total carbon storage of forestland was 1.97 × 108 t in Guangxi Province, and the average carbon density was 14.87 t/hm2.The carbon storage of arboreal forest and shrubs accounted for 99.86% of the total forest carbon storage. The carbon storage of forest age groups was in the following order:middle-aged forests > young forests > near-mature forests > mature forests > over-mature forests. The carbon storage of middle-aged forests and mature forests accounted for 72.21% of the total forest carbon storage. The carbon of natural forest was higher than plantations.Mixed broadleaved forest and masson pine accounted for 77.28% of the natural forest carbon storage, meanwhile, the plantation of Eucalyptus sp., Cunninghamia lanceolata and Pinus massoniana accounted for 87.32% of the plantations.Timber forest, protection forests and non-timber product forest accounted for 93.24% of carbon storage of arboreal forest. The carbon storage of timber forest was the highest, which accounted for 60.08% of carbon storage of arboreal forest. The carbon density of forest category followed the sequence of middle-aged forests special-purpose forest > protection forest > timber forest > non-timber product forest > fuel wood.
