Abstract
A novel natural renewable bio-based grinding wheel has been prepared based on the co-condensation starch-based resin matrix from the corn starch, furfural and formaldehyde and the abrasive particles of silicon dioxide. The main chemical structure, viscosity and gel time of the resin matrix and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the grinding wheel were studied. The results showed that the reaction among starch, furfural and formaldehyde have been proven under weak acidic conditions, and the glass transition temperature of the matrix starch-based resin was higher than that of pure corn starch resin. Meanwhile, the hardness of the grinding wheel prepared with the bio-based resin matrix is higher than that of the grinding wheel based on the phenol-formaldehyde resin matrix prepared in laboratory. Moreover, the cutting performance of the bio-based grinding wheel is similar to that of the phenol-formaldehyde resin grinding wheel prepared in laboratory. Hence, it is feasible to replace part of phenol-formaldehyde resin based grinding wheel with this novel bio-based grinding wheel in the future.
