Super Hydrophilic Wood with Ultrahigh Dimensional Stability

  • In this work, through the method of inorganic-organic doping, nano-silica(SiO2) is mixed into the polyethylene glycol(PEG) solution system and immersed in wood, which wood with both super-hydrophilicity and high dimensional stability. The results show that the maximum contact angle of the oak surface modified by PEG and SiO2 was 23°, the water absorption rate within 24 hours and 10 days were all lower than 30%, and the anti-swelling efficiency within 24 hours and 10 days were both higher than 90%. The leach ratio of the SiO2 mixed group was lower than that of the PEG impregnated group. Compared with single PEG impregnation, although the weight percent gain of the wood after synergistic modification was reduced, the density was slightly increased.
