Survey on Wild Bird Diversity of Kunming Zoo

  • Transect survey and fixed-spot observation were carried out in Kunming Zoo to study the wild bird diversity in two periods of time from 1990 to 1992, and between October 2006 and September 2008. In total, 59 species of wild birds were recorded which belonged to 21 families, 7 orders. Among them, 39 species (66.1%) were residents, 13 species (22.0%) were winter migrants, and 7 species (11.9%) were summer migrants, respectively. 52 species were recorded from 1990 to 1992, and 47 species were recorded from 2006 to 2008. Based on the population dynamics of wild bird species surveyed in these two periods of time, the authors explored the contributing causes and proposed some preliminary recommendations on the conservation of the wild bird diversity in the zoo.
