Identification and Analysis of Culturable Fungi in Spring Feces of Giant Panda(Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in Yunnan Wildlife Park

  • A study on the culturable fungi in the fresh feces of there subadult female giant pandas was conducted in Yunnan Wildlife Park during February to May of 2011. The culturable fungi isolated from the daytime fresh feces were identified and analyzed through dilution, isolation, purification, storage, morphological observation and biochemical experiment. The study found that yeast and mold fungi were isolated from the fecal samples. The mold fungi that were isolated and identified included genera Penicillium, Trichoderma, Aspergillus, and Alternaria, while the yeast fungi that was isolated from the feces sample included genera Rhodotorula and Dekkera. In addition, the detection rate of yeast fungi was 83%, in which Rhodotorula was the predominant genus, whose density was (5.31±0.62)× 105·g-1. There were no significant differences for the total number of yeast fungi among the samples collected at different periods of the daytime (χ2 = 0.933, P= 0.627> 0.05). There were either no significant differences for the total number of yeast fungi among the samples collected from the different animal individuals (H=1.409, P= 0.494> 0.05).
