Comparative Analysis on Relative Fatness and Change in Some Internal Organs of Bombina maxima Before and After Hibernation

  • The physiological indexes including the overall relative fatness, body relative fatness, liver coefficient, fat body coefficient and genital gland coefficient of Bombina maxima were measured between October to November in 2008 before the hibernation and between March to April in 2009 after hibernation in the northeastern suburban area of Kunming City, and the significant difference test was conducted. The results showed that there were some differences in the indexes of overall fatness indicator K and the weight length ratio KWL between the male and female animals. The male and female individuals were divided into adult age 1 and adult age 2 groups respectively according to bodylength of management Statistics Act, the comparison of K and KWL index values between the adult age 1 and adult age 2 groups indicated that index KWL was more accurate to test the difference in physical conditions of individuals between the different ages. After hibernation, the liver coefficient of individuals for both two sexes declined significantly but the fat body coefficient did not change significantly. There were differences between the sexes in the change of genital gland coefficient and nutrient consumption. It was inferred that Bombina maxima might have shortterm predatory behavior during the hibernation because the main source of nutrients consumed by individuals of both two sexes during the hibernation could not be precisely determined.
