Growth Characteristics of Basal Chichi in Seedlings of Ginkgo biloba

  • The incidence rate of basal chichi of Ginkgo biloba plants was studied with 1a and 4 a old seedlings. Out of 211 one year old seedlings, 4 seedlings were found to be with basal chichi, the incidence rate was 1.90%. Whereas 302 four years old seedlings out of 478 were found to have chichi whose incidence rate was 63.18% Among the 302 four years old seedlings with chichi, 211 seedlings were with single chichi, which accounted for 73.18%; 60 seedlings were with 2 chichi that accounted for 19.87%; 18 seedlings were with 3 chichi, accounting for 5.96%; and 3 seedlings with 4 chichi that accounted for 0.99%. The maximum length of basal chichi of 1 year old seedlings was 0.7cm, while the minimum length was 0.5cm, and the average basal chichi length from one year old seedlings was 0.6cm The maximum diameter of the basal chichi of 1 year old seedlings was 05cm, the minimum was 03cm and the average diameter was 0.38cm Whereas the maximum length of basal chichi of 4 years old seedlings was 6.0cm, the minimum chichi length was 0.2cm and the majority chichi were 0-1.5cm long. The maximum diameter of the basal chichi of 4 years old seedlings was 4.0cm, the minimum was 0.2cm and the diameter of the most chichi from 4 years old seedlings was 1.0-2.0cm in diameter. The length and base diameter of the chichi were significantly influenced by the basal chichi number and sprouting quantity. It was observed that 15 four years old seedlings developed adventitious roots from the basal chichi.
