Abstract
The potential for tending and management of the youngandmiddleaged forest resources was studied on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of young and middle aged forest resources in China. The results showed that there was a great potential of forest tending and management, because there was 54618000hm2 young and middle aged forests and plantations to be tended in China, which accounted for 52% of the total young and middle aged forest resources in the country. Among which 47% was with 02-04 crown density, 44% was with 08 crown density, and 9% was suffered from varied natural disasters and severe insect pests. Taking 4982 m3/hm2 as the average standing crop per unit area of the forests to be tendered, the current productivity was only 42% of the potential productivity, the nationwide timber reserves from tending would amount to 2.72 billion m3, and the standing crop of forest resource in China would be increased by 75 billion m3.
