Analyses on YoungandMiddle Aged Forests Characteristics and the Tending Potential in China

  • The potential for tending and management of the youngandmiddleaged forest resources was studied on the basis of analyzing the characteristics of young and middle aged forest resources in China. The results showed that there was a great potential of forest tending and management, because there was 54618000hm2 young and middle aged forests and plantations to be tended in China, which accounted for 52% of the total young and middle aged forest resources in the country. Among which 47% was with 02-04 crown density, 44% was with 08 crown density, and 9% was suffered from varied natural disasters and severe insect pests. Taking 4982 m3/hm2 as the average standing crop per unit area of the forests to be tendered, the current productivity was only 42% of the potential productivity, the nationwide timber reserves from tending would amount to 2.72 billion m3, and the standing crop of forest resource in China would be increased by 75 billion m3.
