Spalting is the coloration of wood caused by fungal colonization. This paper briefly reviewed the mechanism and conditions to form of spalted wood,the impact on the timber properties by the decay of the spalted wood, and the current research status in China and abroad.Then some prospects related to studies on the spalted wood in the future were discussed in the paper.
