A Preliminary Study on Mechanical Properties of Industrial Hemp Structural Timber

  • The technological parameters to prepare industrial hemp structural materials were explored, and the effects of different thickness, cortex structure and adhesive dosage on the mechanical properties of laminated wood and coreboard made of industrial hemp as raw material were studied. The results showed that the overall mechanical properties of laminated wood made of hemp stalk manifested downward with increment of the thickness. The cortex structure could improve the elastic modulus, but adversely affected static bending strength of the laminated wood. The elastic modulus of the hemp stalk laminated wood was decreased at first and then increased, whereas the modulus of rupture was increased first and then decreased along with the increase of adhesive dosage. There were no obvious variations in the static bending strength nor in the elastic modulus of the hemp stalk coreboard when the board thickness was increased. The cortex structure could improve the elastic modulus, but adversely affected static bending strength of the coreboard.
