Abstract:
Different planting patterns for Malus yunnanensis applied to "Grain for Green" national forestry program conducted in Lijiang Municipality were studied. The results indicated that intercropping pattern of M.yunnanensis with Medicago sativa was better than the pure plantation of M.yunnanensis in term of growth and fruiting effect. The density experiments showed that 840 plant/hm
2 or 1110 plant/hm
2 of M.yunnanensis trees intercropped with Medicago sativa resulted in higher survival rate, tree growth rate and fruit yield compared to the pure apple plantations with the same densities. The intercropping pattern could effectively promote the reforestation effect in the cool mountainous area and it was recommended be extended around Lijiang City and in the peripheral areas with elevation from 2300m to 3000m.
