Evaluation of ecological function health status of Dendrocalamus giganteus forest under different logging intensities

Abstract: In response to the potential ecological function decline of the Dendrocalamus giganteus forest after logging, this study took four different logging intensities (selective logging, 1/3 clump logging, 1/2 clump logging, and full clump logging) of Dendrocalamus giganteus forests in the southwestern Yunnan region as research objects.Combining the community characteristics and habitat features of the Dendrocalamus giganteus forest, 16 key indicators were selected from four dimensions:system vitality, system resilience, resistance, and soil conditions, to establish a comprehensive health evaluation index system for the Dendrocalamus giganteus forest. Principal component analysis and comprehensive index method were used to calculate the weights and health index(H), and the ecological function health status was evaluated based on five grades:excellent, healthy, sub-healthy, unhealthy, and diseased. The results show that: The health indices of selective logging, 1/3 clump logging, 1/2 clump logging, and full clump logging are 6.68, 7.15, 8.44, and 4.18 respectively, with an average comprehensive health index of 6.61, indicating that the overall ecological function is in a healthy state. the 1/2 culm harvesting intensity shows significant advantages in terms of leaf area index, litter thickness, biomass, soil erosion degree, and soil thickness, demonstrating the highest overall health level. In contrast, full culm harvesting performs significantly worse than other plots in terms of biomass, soil erosion degree, and species diversity, with the overall performance being at the lowest level. For the harvesting activities of Dendrocalamus giganteus forests, it is recommended to take 1/2 culm harvesting as the primary reference basis to design a more scientific and reasonable harvesting strategy.
